Understanding Clarity: Why Flawless Isn't Necessary

When it comes to the 4 C's, clarity is often the most misunderstood. In this post, we'll clarify what diamond clarity is, how it is graded, and why you do not need a flawless diamond.

What is Diamond Clarity?

Clarity refers to imperfections within and on the surface of a diamond, which are known as inclusions (internal flaws) and blemishes (external flaws). These imperfections are typically the result of the growth process of the stone, but they can also occur from cutting, polishing, and wear.

There are approximately 30 different types of imperfections, including internal mineral crystals, feathers, needles, and clouds, as well as external blemishes such as extra facets, polish lines, and pits.

The Clarity Grading Scale

All diamonds, wether lab grown or natural, are evaluated on the following clarity scale - with Flawless being the highest grade and Included being the lowestThe clarity grade of a diamond is determined by several factors, including the size, number, position, nature, and visibility of these imperfections - all of which are assessed under 10X magnification.

  1. Flawless (FL): No inclusions or blemishes are visible under 10x magnification.
  2. Internally Flawless (IF): No inclusions and only minor blemishes are visible under 10x magnification.
  3. Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2): Inclusions are extremely difficult to see under 10x magnification.
  4. Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2): Inclusions are minor and range from difficult (VS1) to somewhat easy (VS2) to see under 10x magnification.
  5. Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2): Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification and may be visible to the naked eye.
  6. Included (I1, I2, and I3): Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification and can affect transparency and brilliance. These imperfections are often visible to the naked eye.

Why You Do Not Need a Flawless Diamond

Owning a flawless diamond might seem ideal, but these gems are extremely rare and come with a hefty price tag. The good news is that clarity is graded under 10X magnification, making it common to find diamonds with lower clarity grades that are brilliant, clear, and flawless to the naked eye (often referred to as "eye clean"). Most buyers find that diamonds in the Very Slightly Included (VS) to Slightly Included (SI) range offer the best value, providing beautiful options without visible imperfections.

By choosing an eye clean diamond with a lower clarity grade, you can allocate more of your budget towards aspects that can significantly impact the diamond's appearance, such as carat weight, cut, and color.

That said, certain diamond shapes and cuts, such as emerald, asscher, and rose cuts, require a little bit of extra attention when it comes to clarity. These stones are more likely to reveal inclusions due to their facet patterns. However, you can still find eye clean options with a VS or VVS clarity grade for great value.

We highly recommend working with a trained jeweler or gemologist to select your diamond. They can help ensure the diamond you choose is eye clean, along with avoiding certain types of inclusions that may make your stone more susceptible to chipping or cracking with wear.
